Kennedy Doubles Down on Trump Challenge

( – Typically, the presidential debates only include the Democratic and Republican candidates. No third-party candidates have met the criteria to stand on stage with the other candidates since the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) adopted new rules in 2000. That’s why Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has other ideas.

On May 7, Kennedy once again asked former President Donald Trump to debate him. He told the Republican candidate they could meet at the “perfect neutral territory” at the Libertarian Party convention later this month. Trump is set to speak at the event, marking the first time a major party candidate has done so.

Kennedy posted on X, formerly Twitter, and said it was the perfect place for Trump to “defend [his] record for [his] wavering supporters.” The independent candidate said the former president has declared he isn’t afraid to debate him, as long as he has good poll numbers. Kennedy went on to say he’s the only third-party candidate in history to poll “ahead of both major party candidates in head-to-head races.”

The former environmental lawyer called on Trump to show Americans that two of the “major candidates aren’t afraid to debate each other.” He said the Libertarian Party’s convention organizers have already signed off on them using the event for a debate.

Kennedy also attacked the “[Democratic National Committee]-influenced media” using “rigged polling methodologies” against Trump and told him he’d be happy to show him the “deceptive methodologies used by DNC-allied pollsters.” He said that Trump is polling much better in the polls that his campaign takes. However, Kennedy also claims he’s pulling more of the former president’s voters who are mad at him for his actions during the national health crisis in 2020.

FiveThirtyEight’s polling average has Kennedy polling at 10%. While that’s high for an independent candidate, it’s not enough to beat the two major candidates. But it is enough to spoil the election for one of them.
